In 1040AD, I began moving troops north. Target? Barbarian city. In 1060AD, my catapults bombarbed. In 1070AD...

...I captured Minoan.
My cities were training settlers or military units, as my Civics were aligned to Vassalage and Theocracy, temporarily.
I wiped out a second barbarian city deeper in the jungle, clearing the way for my massive expansion push.

In 1160AD, I settled my first city of the new wave, El-Amarna. The following year, Islam was founded there!

I used a Prophet toward 1170-something beakers, but waited until that would net me the religion the next turn, to be sure not to waste my leader in case of losing the race.
You can also see that the AIs finished some wonders on the same turn.
Over the next four turns, I settled SIXadditional cities in the jungle region.

You are looking westward, across the new "northern half" of my empire. From the capture of Minoan to now, I went from eight cities to sixteen almost overnight.
Why now? Well, my core had finally built Markets and Courthouses, cities grown up and well defended, and the trade for Calendar tech would allow me to work those jungle resources. Talk about a golden age of expansionism!

Check out the city maintenance cost!
I thought I took a shot of it, but I don't see it. I beat Chinese settler group to the westernmost jungle sites by only a turn or two.
Khan lets up on the tiny nation of America, finally.

I tried for the Hagia Sofia but missed it by two turns.![]()

When India came sailing by in a Caravel, I bought their maps, and that was enough (combined with my explorations) to "build Magellan's Expedition".

You can see that I have a LOT of work to do in those jungles, and having missed Hagia Sofia, I need to get to Steam Power sooner rather than later.
I tried for Spiral Minaret and lost that one by only ONE turn.![]()

That was from Divine Right tech, too. A tech I got to first! (I wonder if he stole it via an Engineer?)
I did manage to complete Versailles.

Only one city away from the capital, though. More for De Nile Purposes than anything else.
My empire in 1500AD, as I make my push for Liberalism:

Alexandria, Byblos, and all my northern colonies were being whipped like crazy, while my six core cities were allowed to grow and grow.
