By 970AD, Carthage is toast. India made peace with them when they had one city left, so they are not completely gone yet. I can probably use them to pick up whatever bits of tech they have. In fact, when I make it in the middle ages, I am able to trade with them to obtain Republic for my free tech and some dough. I drew a 4-turn anarchy. Here I am when I emerge from that.

Germany has a few cities left but is destined for extinction. No mercy for them, it turns out.
As Egypt had made peace with everybody, when Carthage and Germany disappear, the second round of warring is over. It won't last long, though, as India sneak attacks Egypt in 1090AD. This campaign begins with jumbos, musket and knights, but quickly moves to cavalry and rifles for India. Egypt is behind on tech. Korea and Persia, both scientific civs, are doing well, and they get free techs in the industrial age. Persia scores the coup of selling Nationalism to India, so they are now co-tech-leaders.
My research rate has picked up quite a bit, and I get to Education, which helps me even further with universities.
India buys Korea in to the fight against Egypt. Egypt is doomed unless they can buy Persia and Inca to their side. Here come the Koreans...

India has already burned down one Egyptian city (no resources there, I poached the site), and captured another. Korea is all knights, but they have quite a few of them.
Korea buys in Persia, and then this...

Egypt is losing cities to India. They make peace, but it is too late for Egypt. The other AIs won't talk to her for a few turns, and then it will be too late.
You can also see why my city of Troy is so important. This city's lands keep India's two areas divided, even if only by one or two tiles.
I sold Saltpeter to Egypt so they could build muskets and cavalry, try to help them last longer. In exchange for salt and some money, I got Chemistry and Navigation, which I then used to trade for what techs Carthage still had: Chivalry, Monarchy, and Printing Press.
I then did my only real round of brokering, buying Physics and Metallurgy, then buying Magnetism and trading it plus cash to Egypt for Theory of Gravity, then sellng my free tech, Steam, to Incans for Military Tradition and all their cash, and to Egypt for Democracy and all their money. It was too late to sell to Korea, India or Persia. With Carthage no longer useful, I needed to remove them so I could get the max discount on tech deflation. So I marched some troops up to their last city and took over.

You can also see where I sent two workers and a settler to settle in the marsh. This is an example of a Conquests feature (can't settle on marsh until it is cleared) that the AI is simply not coded to handle. A lot of neat concepts in Conquests are like this. They really could have used Soren's help on this project, but of course we now know he was already busy designing Civ4. I guess that's a case of sacrificing some quality on Conquests to ensure that it all goes in to Civ4. Short term, that has left some fans upset (because C3C didn't fulfill all its potential) but perhaps long term we will all be grateful that this is how it went. We'll have to wait for Civ4 to find out.
Here's my situation in 1400AD, where I am still paying off my debts from those tech buys, and slowly researching my first Industrial tech.

Egypt, as you can see, is in the midst of succumbing to the AI dogpile.
