Whew! Made it.

Now let Leo's fall soon, please.
Um, nope, that didn't happen. Cop's went down with the cascade. I built my cathedral then started in on Magellan.
Meanwhile, looking across the water, Japan had gotten an extremely slow start, and were right next to Pyramids builder Nordica. I had predicted an early end to the Japs, but instead the Vikes started to swallow their more distant neighbor, the Celts. Still, looking at that situation and knowing the Vikes had the Pyramids, they seemed destined to swallow both Japan and Celts, and then be too big for Spain, too. Mark my words, by game's end, there will be only one civ on the other continent. That could bode very ill for my chances. Why couldn't Korea have gotten the Pyramids? Or Japan? Or Arabia? Oh well.
As Magellan neared completion, Bach's was still on the table and I decided to make a gambit. Instead of 3 culture, would be better to snag 8 (Shakespeare's) or 6 (Newton), and those were almost in play. I swapped to Bach and pressed on, confident I could still get Magellan if nothing else. If I could get Shakespeare's... *drool*
Democracy did not break in time, but ToG did!

Bingo! OK, that's enough culture (with easy extras to come later) to guarantee getting to 20k before time expires. Now the question is... can I get there before the AI's win by another method?
Sure would be nice to pull Shake's, too, but that was not to be in the cards. In fact, I came VERY close to missing Newton, as Bach's was finished ON THE SAME TURN!

Everyone switched to Smith, and the cascade from that took out Magellan and Shakespeare. So my "next wonder" turned into a university, around 1000AD.
Korea pulled Steam as their free tech, and France turned out to have an iron works city, which built Suffrage too darn easily. My economy stank and I had to pay out through the nose for iron to build rails, and to buy in to the tech.

I was surprised my silk poach held out. For the amount of pressure on it, it had a small garrison. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

When I read that the Celts bit it, I figured Japan would be the next target.

Now check this out.

Not the first T-hawk map with a key resource just outside my border. Probably won't be the last, either.
Oh, and note that despite my best effort, Calcutta has fallen behind in the culture war. Too slow to build its uni.
