The game took a dramatic turn in 800AD:

Egypt's chariots charged out front and got slaughtered, but it turned out they scored at least one victory, kicking off Cleo's golden age. Rome ultimately won the first round, though.

The rest of my universities were completed in the early to mid 800's AD, too late for 1000yr bonus on scoring, but still useful at 4cpt. My prebuild at Baghdad may have to go for Copernicus unless an AI researches Music Theory soon enough. With Astronomy due up next and my intention to do my own research into Navigation to ensure access to Magellan's, I built three galleys and moved the first around to the south and east. The others I parked off the coast of Najran. As soon as I got Navigation, I would go looking for the other two civs. My adventuring galley took out a pair of barb ships on one turn and got promoted off the coast of Istanbul.

Rome's brief advantage did not last long. Egypt began training knights. Rome fended off a couple of these, but then their offensive forces in my land were spent and Egypt surged back across my territory.
With her golden age upon her, Cleo discovers Music Theory, then soon also discovers Astronomy and Banking. Rome, meanwhile, has discovered chemistry, while Egypt doesn't have it. I pull some trades and get Music Theory and Chemistry. Baghdad swaps to Bach while Najran starts on Palace prebuild.
Egypt bought the Turks into the war on their side. Poor Rome. When Osman gets Music Theory in the late 900's AD, I buy that off Cleo, trade it and two lux and some big cash to Rome for Chemistry @2nd, then trade Chemistry @3rd and big cash and gpt to Egypt for Astronomy @2nd, then trade Astronomy @3rd to Rome and get my cash back from them. Rome, in the tail end of their golden age, starts Cop in Rome. Sheesh. In the middle of a war! That may have sealed their fate. Rome is their only strong city.
Mecca and Damascus have been training Ansars. I have quite a few by now. With Egypt and Rome both in golden age, I need to enter my golden age soon. I wait for my deals with the Turks to expire, which they do in 1000AD. Here is my cultural standing at that point.

The poor Turks never did get any iron. There were only three sources on our continent, meaning someone was going to miss out. As such, he had only spears defending his cities.

Our golden age began promptly with the first attack.

My forces overran Edrine and burned it to the ground, picking up four slave labor and securing all four spices within our border. Next up was Bursa. That blight had to go. This secured my second source of saltpeter.

I took a screen shot of capturing Edrine but forgot to paste it to file, so I had to take another one after the fact. You can see my Copernicus prebuild going now in Medina. I'm using Cop as prebuild for Magellan at Najran.

These two attacks cost me one Ansar and used all but one of my Ansars. The Turk's days were numbered. While I had them on the ropes, I intended to eliminate the game's only scientific civ, prevent them from buying their way back into the game via their free industrial age tech. After all, honorable bonus points were awarded per age. Once you had committed even one dastardly act in an age, you might as well keep going! :)
